Have Perseverance When Building Your First Email List

You must have perseverance when building your first email list. All too often new marketers come online full of vim and vigor, powered up by promises of untold wealth to be made in short order online, promises that range from questionable to outright nonsense. Before long, these would-be online super-stars are frustrated, disillusioned and demotivated by their lack of results in building an email list.

The truth is that email list building is an empirical process. That is, it takes more time than you anticipate because you’re starting off small and it takes time to build up the necessary resources to build email lists faster. Say you’ve started a blog and have your opt-in form on it. At first there will be little or no results, because your blog is new and hasn’t built a following or a major presence in the search engines yet. As time goes on and you post more and more content, more readers should discover your blog and usually some of them will opt-in – you’ve started building your first email list!

In addition, you’ve written a report to give away free to targeted prospects who join your email list – but again, you’ll need to drive targeted traffic to it to get an audience in the first place. Social media and social bookmarking sites work great for this, but building followings there takes time too.

• Article Marketing – Writing and submitting articles is one of the easiest free ways to start driving targeted prospects to your links – especially when that link leads to a squeeze page with a free PDF, audio or video with more information on the same topic. Stay within the guidelines of the article directory, provide great content and offer more information on the topic through the link in your Author’s Resource Box.
• Using Blogs – The first of the interactive web 2.0 technologies to gain wide appeal was blogging – and it remains one of the most powerful methods to drive traffic and build lists. Be sure your opt-in form appears on the blog itself, and use the articles you have at the directories as the bulk of your blog content. Be sure to use the appropriate blog plugins to maximize your SEO benefits, and to hook you up to traffic sources like Twitter, MyBlogLog and Technorati.
• Using Podcasts – A podcast is simply information presented in audio format, usually as an MP3. Since you already have those articles and your blog, now record an audio version of them and place them with the article on your blog using an audio plugin. Be sure to mention your URL in each recording, and check to see if the plugin you’re using is building a separate RSS feed for your podcasts – if it isn’t, create one manually and submit the RSS feed to iTunes, PodcastReady, Podcast Alley, etc. These directories are accessed by millions of users, and they don’t index articles or blogs, so audio is the only way to get your message to their users.
• Video Marketing – Like podcasts, videos are just one more media to present your information in. Whether you use live-action video or create screen-capture videos, you can repurpose the same info you have for your articles and podcasts by making them into videos and getting them out to YouTube, Viddler, etc. Make sure you have the link to your site within the video along with a call to action, and spell out your link in the description area that accompanies each video.
• Using Free Downloads – One of the most powerful ways to get people onto your opt-in list is through a squeeze page – a page offering an incentive to those who sign up. That incentive is usually a PDF report, an audio or a video that contain helpful information on the topic at hand – the topic targeted by your marketing efforts. And you already have the raw materials for the gift – your articles, podcasts and/or videos. Once again, compile the articles, audios or videos into a single download and build a page giving them away to those who opt to join your list. Use the social media sites like Twitter & Facebook, your blog, etc. to drive traffic to that gift and build your list.
• Using Teleseminars and Interviews – Are you an expert in your niche? If so, set up a teleseminar and spend an hour giving out valuable information to your audience. Require a signup to your list for entry to the call, and be sure to include a Q&A session at the end so people get the most from it. If you’re not an expert, arrange to interview someone who is and use that as your live call. Be sure to record the call either way, and offer the replay and/or download from a squeeze page for ongoing list-building from it. If a live teleseminar isn’t possible, do the interview by phone or Skype and record it, then offer the replay from the squeeze page. Another method is to grab an expert and ask a series of 5-10 questions, then break each question and answer down into a series of podcasts to use sequentially.
• Using Affiliate Programs – Do you have products of your own for sale online? If so, set up an affiliate program and spend some time each week recruiting new affiliates and joint venture partners to promote your products. Set up ‘affiliate funnels’ – automatic e-courses that go to the prospects your affiliates refer. The e-course should deliver strong content while pre-selling your product and be designed to lead the prospect to buy your product – and hopefully more than one. Be careful not to use affiliate links in your e-course, as you don’t want to overwrite the cookies for the referring affiliate. The better the e-course converts prospects to buyers the greater the affiliate commissions you’ll be paying out, and the harder your affiliates will be working to drive traffic to your squeeze page, thus making you more money and building your list that much faster.

List building is perhaps the most important aspect of Internet marketing – after all, how often have you heard that the ‘money is in the list’? Every morning, like clockwork, I send out our e-zine and by the end of the day have banked another few hundred dollars on average. So it’s safe to say that without our optin lists it would take a lot more effort to stay in the 6-7 figure a year range.

Another important part of Internet marketing is the networking we do with other marketers, usually resulting in lasting friendships. Here’s an important question for you… Have you decided to be successful this year?

At first, that might sound like a silly question – you probably said, right off the top, of course I have!

Everyone does – but most are kidding themselves. You see, chances are you already know what it takes to be successful online, or at the very least you know what the next few steps you should take are. Right? So have you? Have you started taking those steps?

You see, there’s a whole world of difference between WANTING to be successful and DECIDING to be successful. With the former you dream of what you’d do with all the bucks, all the toys, all the time, etc. With the latter you do the same – then go ahead and make it come true!

So when I ask if you’ve DECIDED to be successful in 2009, the real question is ‘Are you ready to ACT on that decision and bring your dreams to life?’ Or are you going to let another year go by where you leave it all up to fate, hoping your cubicle is still yours tomorrow, all the while hating going TO that cubicle 5 days a week?

When you’re ready to take action, your first and most important step is to learn to drive targeted traffic. Why first? Because targeted traffic is what makes squeeze pages, salespages, blogs and affiliate promotions successful.

Whether today’s mission is to build your list, sell some products or do well with an affiliate push, it’s your ability to drive targeted traffic that makes or breaks you. And that’s the one item usually overlooked when learning about Internet marketing, affiliate marketing or niche marketing.

You see, you’re always being told ‘The Money is in the List’ – meaning that it’s your opt-in list that gives you the ability to make a profit online at will. And that IS true – once your list is in the thousands. But they don’t point out what it takes to GET that list built up to that point first – targeted traffic.

Right now the Web 2.0 social sites like Twitter, Facebook, MySpace & MyBlogLog are all the rage, in large part because of the traffic they can drive to your sites. Add to that the online ‘authority’ sites like Squidoo, HubPages, Weebly & Google Knol, and you have a whole collection of potential traffic sources.

But it’s important to remember they’re PART of your traffic-generation arsenal, not the whole plan. Traditional traffic generation sources like on-site Search Engine Optimization, article marketing, teleseminars, joint venture giveaways, viral e-books and solo ad swaps with other marketers must still be employed.

That still isn’t it, though… Blogging is probably the single biggest boost to free traffic generation to come along since the invention of the search engines, and it’s evolution has now brought us to podcasting and video blogging as well. In fact, each of those is now becoming it’s own traffic source too, with podcast directories like iTunes and video hosting sites like YouTube drawing millions of viewers every month.

The most overlooked traffic source in the blogoshere is blog commenting; reading and offering relevant, related comments on other people’s blogs. By default, blogs use a ‘do not follow’ tag that stops search engines from finding your sites through your comments. But a growing number of intelligent bloggers have come to realize they should reward you for valuable interaction with their site, and now use a DoFollow plugin to give you that extra help whn you leave worthwhile comments on their blogs.

Some have taken it a step further, adding the CommentLuv plugin, which also then adds a link to your latest blog post after your comment. These links are gold – not only do they provide one-way links to your blog for the search engines to find, but they drive traffic directly from those blogs to yours, as people see post titles that interest them. After all, if they’re interested in the post they’re reading, see your relevant comment & then a link to a related post on YOUR blog, it’s only natural for them to click through and keep reading.

The same is true on forums, and help sites like Yahoo! Answers. The more targeted your response, the more helpful your posts, the greater the number of people who will click through to check out your blog – and a sign-up form for your opt-in list on every part of your blog will ensure that keeps the all-mighty list growing non-stop too!

So how difficult is it to build an ever-increasing flow of targeted traffic? Not difficult at all – it just requires time, effort, discipline and persistence. How expensive is it? It needn’t cost you a cent, although many of the tasks can be automated or outsourced, and your efforts multiplied many times over by using paid resources…

But consider this for a moment – this article alone has mentioned twenty different sources of free targeted traffic. Powerful enough resources to bring thousands, hundreds of thousands or even millions of visiotrs a year to your site over time. Yet how many of them are you actually using so far? How consistent have you been in using them?

Time to take your targeted traffic generation a bit more seriously if this truly is your year to become successful, isn’t it?
